چکیده

Molecular reaction dynamics in the adiabatic representation is complicated by the existence of conical intersections and the associated geometric phase effect. The first-derivative coupling vector between the corresponding electronically adiabatic states can, in general, be decomposed into longitudinal ~removable! and transverse ~nonremovable! parts. At intersection geometries, the longitudinal part is singular, whereas the transverse part is not. In a two-electronic-state Born– Huang expansion, an adiabatic-to-diabatic transformation completely eliminates the contribution of the longitudinal part to the nuclear motion Schrödinger equation, leaving however the transverse part contribution. We report here the results of an accurate calculation of this transverse part for the 1 A8 and 2 A8 electronic states of H3 obtained by solving a three-dimensional Poisson equation over the entire domain U of internal nuclear configuration space Q of importance to reactive scattering. In addition to requiring a knowledge of the first-derivative coupling vector everywhere in U, the solution depends on an arbitrary choice of boundary conditions. These have been picked so as to minimize the average value over U of the magnitude of the transverse part, resulting in an optimal diabatization angle. The dynamical importance of the transverse term in the diabatic nuclear motion Schrödinger equation is discussed on the basis of its magnitude not only in the vicinity of the conical intersection, but also over all of the energetically accessible regions of the full U domain. We also present and discuss the diabatic potential energy surfaces obtained by this optimal diabatization procedure. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1419257#

Optimal diabatic states based on solvation parameters.

A new method for obtaining diabatic electronic states of a molecular system in a condensed environment is proposed and evaluated. This technique, which we denote as Edmiston-Ruedenberg (ER)-ε diabatization, forms diabatic states as a linear combination of adiabatic states by minimizing an approximation to the total coupling between states in a medium with temperature T and with a characteristic...

Ab initio treatment of the chemical reaction precursor complex Br(2P)-HCN. 1. Adiabatic and diabatic potential surfaces.

The three adiabatic potential surfaces of the Br(2P)-HCN complex that correlate to the 2P ground state of the Br atom were calculated ab initio. With the aid of a geometry-dependent diabatic mixing angle, also calculated ab initio, these adiabatic potential surfaces were transformed into a set of four diabatic potential surfaces required to define the full 3 x 3 matrix of diabatic potentials. E...

Bound states of the OH„ ...–HCl complex on ab initio diabatic potentials

The bound states of the open-shell OH 2 –HCl complex were calculated in four dimensions with a diabatic model using electronic states that correlate asymptotically with the ground and excited spin-orbit states of the OH 2 fragment and the ground state of the HCl fragment. The ab initio diabatic potentials and their analytic expansion applied in these calculations were obtained earlier by Wormer...

Formation of a Spheromak Plasma Configuration

As seen in Fig. 1(a), the diabatic signal does indeed increase as the value of n increases. In addition, both ionization features are evident at slew rates differing by a factor of 2 from that used to obtain the data in Fig. 1. When both lasers are polarized parallel to the direction of the electric field, then theoretically no ~ m, ~ = 2 can be produced and, in this case, we observe a dramatic...
